£25 million announced for South East counties

25 September 2008
South East counties are to benefit from a £25 million cash injection from the government to kick-start better bus services across the region.

The cash injection has been announced by transport secretary Ruth Kelly under the government's Kickstart programme, which has already helped councils and bus operators in England introduce 43 new or enhanced bus services in the last three years.

"If we are to encourage more people to leave their car at home we have to give them more choice over how they travel," Ruth Kelly said.

"Kickstart has already made a real difference, giving people reliable, accessible, modern and comfortable buses and linking them to vital local services like hospitals, employment, schools or colleges and leisure facilities."

Among the beneficiaries were Kent County Council, which has connected deprived areas to the regional centre of Canterbury after receiving £447,000.ADNFCR-1584-ID-18797102-ADNFCR
