£230m investment to boost South East transport links

4 November 2008
A £230 million funding package from BAA has been awarded to Crossrail in a deal that will see the rail operator guarantee a fast train service four times an hour for the majority of the day, boosting transport links in the South East.

While making the announcement, Transport Minister Andrew Adonis said the investment will not only create better links that are ideal for business but also create jobs.

"Trains will run four times an hour for most of the day - cutting journey times across London and the South East and significantly improving rail access to Heathrow for thousands of passengers and airport workers every day," he said.

He went on to say that Crossrail "was the largest addition to the transport network in 50 years" and the investment marked a "major step towards its delivery".

Some 30,000 extra jobs are expected to be created as a result of the investment, whose contribution to the UK economy is projected to be at least £20 billion.ADNFCR-1584-ID-18857763-ADNFCR
