£35m investment leads to jobs in Kent

5 November 2008
A £35 million investment in the South East by rail operator Southeastern has resulted in the creation of jobs in Kent.

Southeastern has decided to base some its new high speed trains at Ramsgate depot and this has resulted in the creation of 160 jobs, according to a company official, the BBC reports.

According to Nigel Jarret, most of the new Hitachi class 395 trains will be kept at the main base in Ashford but a few will be housed at the Ramsgate facility, which is "quite an impressive building".

"There's about 160 jobs that have been secured by this new facility. The shed alone has 8,000 square metres and five roads as we call them that trains can be brought in on for maintenance," he said.

"One of its jobs is to look after our existing 375 Electrostar fleet trains that our mainline customers now use but it will also be providing stabling and light maintenance possibilities for the new class 395 high speed trains."

The trains are expected to halve journey times between London's St Pancras International station and Ashford from 2009.ADNFCR-1584-ID-18860201-ADNFCR
