£5m laboratories opened at the University of Oxford

6 February 2009
The University of Oxford is set to improve vaccine research and development following the opening of a new £5 million facility.

Scientists working on vaccines against diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and bird flu will be housed at the new Jenner Institute Laboratories based at the Old Road Campus Research building.

The facility was opened on Thursday (February 5th) by Dr Tadataka Yamada, President of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Health Programme.

Commenting on the investment, Professor Adrian Hill, Director of the Jenner Institute said the new state-of-the-art laboratories will boost the university's vaccine research and development.

He said: "With the concentration of researchers we have here, coupled with these excellent new facilities, we are well placed to tackle the challenge of developing vaccines against some of the world's most devastating infectious diseases."

The Jenner Vaccine Foundation, the MRC, the Wellcome Trust and the Wolfson Foundation supported the construction of the new laboratories.ADNFCR-1584-ID-19014326-ADNFCR
