Healthcare & Life Sciences

31 March 2007
Sector Overview

Healthcare and Life SciencesIf you are growing your international business presence in the life science and healthcare industry, you need to consider the UK’s South East. Whether your business is looking to expand into new markets, carry out cutting edge R&D activity, identify new business partners, or position itself nearer to suppliers and competitors, the South East is the place to be.

The region is home to the highest concentration of healthcare companies in the UK and is the main location of choice for foreign-owned companies with over 6,900 companies employing 240,000 people.

  • The region is home to 11 of the world’s top 12 pharmaceutical companies, which are located in the South East or near its border, including Johnson & Johnson, Wyeth and GlaxoSmithKline.
  • Twenty percent of the UK’s medical devices companies are based in the region. The success of these companies is enhanced by strong electronics, engineering software and biotechnology sectors.
  • Many leading biotechnology companies have operations in the region. Investment and research in this area is supported by organisations such as Oxford Bioscience. Biotech companies located in the region include Genzyme, Takeda, Murex Biotech, and Astellas.

Businesses in this sector are drawn to the South East for many reasons. One major attraction is The National Health Service (NHS), the main UK customer for healthcare products, with its purchasing and supply agency based in Reading. The region’s close location, and therefore quick access, to financial and medical centres in London, is also a huge advantage.

Renowned for its expertise and expenditure in research and development, the South East has welcomed key research and production facilities of global healthcare organisations, including Pfizer, the UK’s largest pharmaceutical company, Genzyme, one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, and Respironics UK Ltd, a US medical devices company.

The region is home to three internationally renowned centres of clinical research excellence. The University of Oxford is a world leader in life science research. Its Department of Biochemistry is one of the largest in Europe, specialising in genetics, molecular cell biochemistry and structural biology. The University of Sussex has four Life Sciences Departments and centres for Neuroscience, Biomolecular Design and Drug Development. In addition, the Universities of Brighton, Kent, Reading and Surrey all carry out internationally recognised Life Science and Healthcare research projects.
