Sector Overview
 The UK has the largest marine sector in Europe. It has a turnover of £37 billion per year and employs more than 250,000 people, 40% of whom are employed in the South East region.
The region is home to commercial and leisure marine companies, many trade bodies, research organisations, testing facilities, training providers and other support organisations. The Marine Technology sector is complemented by the region’s strengths in other high tech engineering industries such as aerospace and motorsport.
Marine companies in the region include BAE Systems, P&O Cruises, QinetiQ, Marine Electronic Systems, VT Halmatic, Lockheed Martin STASYS Limited, Raymarine, Aquatec Group, Seaeye Marine Ltd, BMT SeaTech Ltd, GRP Laminates, Seaway Marine, Ocean Scientific International, Palmer Johnson, Crewsaver, Lewmar, Spinlock and International Yacht Paints.
The sector covers ship building and maintenance, pleasure boat building, manufacture of engines and turbines and numerous service providers to the industry. Many companies are clustered around the Solent, which has a new waterfront development at Cowes on the Isle of Wight and the more established facilities in Southampton and the Portsmouth naval base.
