Sector Overview
The South East is the UK hot-spot for environmental technologies. It has strengths in: environmental monitoring; instrumentation and analysis; water and waste water management; waste recycling; environmental consultancy; marine pollution control; energy management and the development of alternative energies. The high presence of engineering contractors, many with environmental consultancy divisions, also sets the region apart.
Over 1,200 environmental companies are located in the South East including USA owned Strategic Diagnostics, RWE Thames Water plc - the UK’s largest water company, Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Onyx) – one of UK’s leading waste management companies, and the Icelandic waste management company, Ecoprocess.
New environmental laws and policies are set to increase the demand for environmental products and services in the construction and domestic sectors. These new policies will unlock some very significant commercial and domestic opportunities for companies in the environmental sector and the South East will be right at the centre of it.
Opportunities for environmental technology companies in the South East:
Renewable Energy To achieve renewable energy targets, the region is proactively pursuing the development of alternative sources of electricity generation, in particular wind, biomass and solar.
Sustainable ConstructionThe South East has the highest level of commercial and domestic development in the UK. For the area to meet its renewable energy targets and constraints on existing water resources, new developments must be more environmentally efficient, such as solar water heating, ground heat pumps and grey water systems.
Waste Management
The economic success of the South East is leading to environmental challenges such as the increase in municipal and industrial waste production. Market opportunities exist for effective new treatment methods.
